Every nation cherishes its past- remembering its mistakes,
appreciating the good days and eventually looking forward to a bright future. Remembering
important milestones in history is a way to get closer to our heritage and be
an integral part of our national consciousness. Each country celebrates a day
dedicated to the nation, commemorating its independence or other days where the
nation achieved an important milestone. Here in India, we celebrate 2 days-
Independence day-celebrating the start of our freedom and republic day-
celebrating the day when we implemented our constitution.
The history behind
Independence Day
The British ruled us for 150 years. They used us, channeled
our wealth for their own means and used our resources to fulfill demands
abroad. The Indian National Congress,
after a dedicated fight, had launched the ‘Quit India Movement’ in 1942. The
struggle bore fruit when the British parliament passed the Indian Independence
Act,1947 which cemented the resolve to
grant India independence by June 1948. Due to certain reasons, the date was
advanced to August 1947, by the then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten. Eventually, both
India and Pakistan got their independence on 15th of August 1947.
This momentous time will always be remembered in history by first Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech on the ‘tryst with destiny’. Every year
since, there has been the tradition of the Prime Minister unfurling the flag
and giving a speech on Independence Day at the Red fort in New Delhi.
